Five days following the lavish wedding of Karnataka politician and mining magnate Gali Janardhan Reddy’s daughter in Bengaluru, the Income Tax department has issued him a three-page notice with 15 questions that he must answer by Friday.
A two-page set of questions given to Mr Reddy at his Bellary home demands for information of how the former minister expended on a wedding card equipped with LCD screens, jewellery, outfits, entertainment and food for the extravagant event.
Some tax officials discretely went to the wedding ceremony and several other locations where functions were organised, amongst questions about crores used on life-size replicas of monuments, mini-villages, electric elephants and Brazilian performers at the Bangalore Palace grounds.
Activists claim that 500 crores were spent by G J Reddy but his relatives state the total spending is nearer to Rs. 30 crores and the majority of it was paid out by cheque to event managers long before demonetization.
Past Wednesday, about 50,000 family, and friends went to the insanely expensive event arranged at a time millions are battling with a currency ban that has seriously limited their cash.
