China on Tuesday termed a media report as wrong. It was said that China is constructing a 10000-km tunnel to divert the water flow of Brahmaputra river from Tibet to the border of Arunachal Pradesh to Zhenjiang.
Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post had said yesterday that Chinese engineers are testing new technologies which can be used in the construction of the world’s longest tunnel. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying misinterpreted this in a media briefing. They said, ‘This is not true. This report is wrong. ‘
He said China will continue to support the importance of border cross-river cooperation. This proposed tunnel will provide water to China’s largest administrative region. The water stream of the Yarlung Tsangpo River in southern Tibet will be diverted to Taclakan Desert of Xinjiang.
In India, this river is known as the Brahmaputra. India has conveyed its concerns to Beijing on the Brahmaputra river on several dams from China.
Researcher Wang Wei, who was instrumental in preparing the Tibet-Xinjiang water tunnel proposal, said that different teams of more than 100 scientists have been formed in the research work. The government of China started the construction of more than 600 kilometers of tunnels in central Yanan province in August this year.
Researchers say that the tunnel created in Yunnan is a rehearsal of new technology. It can be used to hold the water flow of the Brahmaputra river.
