The govt on Tuesday banned Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), the NGO of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik+ , as an ‘unlawful organisation’ for 5 years with instant effect.
The ban has been made under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and accepted at a meeting of the Union Cabinet.
Based on sources in the home ministry, there was a strong case for banning IRF based on information and material shared by the Maharashtra government and the central intelligence agencies.
