India beat Ireland 3-2 in the Hockey Group B contest of the Rio 2016 Olympics on Saturday.
India completely outclassed the Irish in the 1st three-quarters but they did hold back in the fourth to cut down India’s lead.
All five goals have scored in the match came via penalty corners as goalies from each side – Sreejesh and Hart – were at the top of their game and kept denying the possibility of a field goal.
For India, Raghunath opened up the score with a fantastic drag flick and Rupinder grown India’s lead when he turned two more penalty corners.
Sreejesh again stood out as he was neat under pressure and was standing like a wall in the front of the goal post.
In the end, it turned out to be a job well done for India as they got their campaign off to a winning start.
India has won a record eight gold medals in hockey at Olympics and a record overall of 11 medals. However, the last medal they won was in 1980 Moscow Olympics which was a gold. After that, India has been unsuccessful to win any medal at the Games. But because of this team and their form, we are hopeful for another medal.
