SANDEEP TOMAR
Extremely confident, the 24-year-old from Malakpur Baraut, has never returned empty handed from an international tournament in his short career. Till now he has won seven medals, which includes gold in the 2016 Asian Championships. He grabbed his chance after Rahul Aware walked out of the wrestling training camp.
NARSINGH PANCHAM YADAV
Faster than most Indian wrestlers even below his weight category, Yadav is quick on his feet and can take even his strongest opponent by surprise. Bronze medal at the 2015 World Championship in Las Vegas.
Women’s Freestyle
BABITA KUMARI
Babita only got her Rio ticket right after Mongolia’s Sumiyaa Erdenechimegiin, her conqueror at the Asian Olympic qualifier, analyzed positive for the banned Meldonium. Babita was under WFI scanner for refusing to fight the repechage round in opposition to Mexico’s Alma Jane Valencia Escoto in the World Olympic Qualifiers in Mongolia.
VINESH PHOGAT
Vinesh, the most youthful international from the popular wrestling household of the Phogats, was criticised soon after she was disqualified for being overweight by 400gms at the weigh-in of the World Olympic Qualifiers in Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia. WFI let her off the hook with a warning. She clinched an allowance in the next qualifying tournament, held in Istanbul.
SAKSHI MALIK
Sakshi Malik represented India in the women’s freestyle 58 kg category at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in which she won the silver medal. She also represented India in the women’s freestyle 60 kg category at the 2014 World Wrestling Championships in Tashkent.
Men’s Greco-Roman
HARDEEP SINGH
The surprise package, he won a silver in the 98kg category at the Asian qualifiers in Kazakhstan. Was the first Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to win a quota. Afterwards, won silver at the Asian Championships.
RAVINDER KHATRI
Ravinder Khatri competes in the 85kg category. Khatri secured the bronze medal at Men’s 85kg Greco-Roman event at the 2016 Asian Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament. Khatri gained qualification for the Olympics as the silver medal winner of the tournament.
