At least six individuals were died and 15 others suffered grievous injuries in a stampede at a jetty at Kachuberia in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district on Sunday.
District authorities said two pilgrims passed away right away and 3, including the woman, in the hospital.
The stampede happened at around 6 p.m. when there was clearly a massive rush of pilgrims to board boats to reach Kolkata, the authorities stated, adding that every one of them were middle-aged and are not yet been identified.
A lookup operation has been brought out by naval divers to find out for individuals who could possibly have fallen into the Buriganga River in the stampede, they added.
An overall 16 lakh pilgrims had taken their holy dip in two days on the event of Makar Sankranti at the Gangasagar Mela, West Bengal Public Health Engineering and Rural Development Minister Subrata Mukherjee said.
The holy dip is taken at the Gangasagar Mela each year when the river Ganga merges in the Bay of Bengal Sea in the course of Makar Sankranti at Sagardwip.
