He was dwelling as a thriving chef in Taj hotels, Bangalore in addition to that even short-listed for a top level job in Switzerland.
But the final visit to his residence prior to going to Europe transformed his life once and for all.
He was on the way to a temple in his car when he observed an old man below a bridge. At that time he didn’t know that this old man was about to switch his life forever.
The old man was very weak and he was so hungry that he was having his own human waste for food.
That one event haunted him a lot that he made the decision to give up his job, and chose to serve the poor and psychologically ill individuals.
In 2003 he founded a nonprofitable Akshaya Trust.
Till now he has served about 2 million meals to the homeless.
He used to spend his night in Akshaya’s simple kitchen together with his helping staff.
Since committing his whole savings in 2003, he has taken no salary till date.
The Malayalam movie “Ustad Hotel” is based on his life.
“Be the change you want to see in this world.” He has proven it with his life.
In 2010, he was awarded the CNN heroes award.
