PM Narendra Modi today chaired a meeting with senior officials on the Indus Water Treaty that was signed between India and Pakistan.
The Indus water treaty was signed by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan President Ayub Khan in September 1960.
The treaty involves sharing of waters of 6 rivers Beas, Ravi, Sutlej, Indus, Chenab and Jhelum.As per the conditions of the Treaty finalized in 1960, India has control over eastern rivers of Beas, Ravi and Sutlej which all flow from Punjab. India could use the waters of western rivers only in a “non-consumptive” manner.
Pakistan controls western rivers Indus, Chenab and Jhelum that flow from Jammu and Kashmir And after the dastardly uri attack by Pakistani terrorist there have been calls to abrogate it.
Although the two countries have been managing to share the waters without major dispute, experts say that the agreement is one of the most lop-sided with India being allowed to use only 20 percent of the six-river Indus water system.
